Dog Sledding Paradise - March 22-29

Ola and Gunilla Lindgren with their nine siberian huskies came again to spend the last week of March at Nordic Husky Farm.

We all had great time - training of 4 teams every day, puppy walks, evening talks after dinner, disucssing races, training, breeding.

We also tested that two stakeouts of two different mushers can comfortably fit on our parking area infront of the house and everyone could train their dogs per their own schedulle, without interfering with the others.

Our tie-out area in the dog yard fit well the needs of several teams, which can hook up from our dog yard, all at the same time.

The week felt almost like a boot camp - we discussed equipment, sleds, types of harnesses, we had a little demo of massaging and bandaging doggy feet, and we also did some head-on passing of three teams.

Alexandra with her husband Torsten from Germany, their four siberian huskies and now also son Malte (who came for his Easter vacation and immeditely found his favourite dog -Cooper (the Mal) :)) are staying at Nordic Husky Farm since the middle of March, until the end of April.

Snowshoeing Adventure or a Bear Safari?

With Nordic Husky Farm´s Outdoor Adventures you never know! There are plenty of surprises waiting for you, literaly behind every tree :) Oportunities of your lifetime adventure await you in the woods, on the frozen lake, in the hills, simply in the untouched wilderness that we call home.On Vedjeön island, just about 700m from Nordic Husky Farm, a bear made his winter den, right off the shore, nearby an old, abandoned log building.

And since the days in the second part of March were quite warm and sunny, the bear woke up, walked around the island, down to the lake, he aparently feasted on a large snow bird, which a fox brought to the bank, and went to bed again. That is what we could "read" from the tracks he left behind and from seeing the den, which we did not dare to take time to photograph. And - - oh yes, he was a BIG one! :)

Besides the ocassional adrenaline surprise it can give you, snowshoeing is a popular, easy and real fun activity for the whole family. No special skills needed. And you get just about anywhere you desire, even if the snow is 2 meters high. It´s a great excercise and keeps one quite fit.

2009 Winter Tour Reflections

Winter in our area was kind to us this year - that means we had loads of snow, sun and also freeze! :)

Our winter tours are very limited due to our busy training schedule, for sled dog races. If you would like to book a tour, contact us well in advance and we will work out the best possible options and offer for you!

We also cooperate with a large sled dog tour operator in the area and will gladly recommend them to you!

Who Says Autumn Isn' t Time for Holidays?

There is so much one can do and enjoy during September and October, even in the North!

Hiking is an especially extraordinary experience, when you can watch the colorful palet of nature, as it's getting ready for the winter sleep.

All the creatures, small and large, are in rush and you can watch them hurry with gathering food stocks for the long period of cold. Squirells stock up their nests, foxes hunt as much mice as they can to gain some weight, bear tracks zig zag the forrest trails as they search for the most suitable, protected and comfy dens for their long winter sleep. Moose roam the area in search for partners and hundreds of birds cruise the skyes on their way south.

Absorbing the last warm sun rays while sitting on raindeer skins around the fire, sipping freshly cooked coffee, playing with puppies and of course - training the huskies for the tough winter competitions.

When your finger tips get cold and your chins turn red from the wind and spending whole day out, you enjoy the warmth of the fire place and a home baked pie, while reading a book in the cozy living room of the farm.

Half Day Tour to Lakavattnet - September 4, 2008

Beautiful weather, just perfect for this easy walking tour in the foothills of mountains, in Hotagen's Nature Reserve.

Four humans and two canines set on an easy hike on the trails of Lakavattnet, with another goal in mind, than just walking: another blueberry attack! :)

The blueberry crops were so huge this year, and the size of the berries was just monsterously scary!

Blueberry Attack - August 24, 2008

Gina and Stewart, Kim, Pluto, Jachym and I, equipped with large jogurt containers, hit our forrest trail and attacked the blueberry crops :)

While Pluto was having fun peeing, sniffing and laying around blueberries, the human part of the group picked this year´s first sweet and plantiful cloud and blueberries.

We took a nice hike down to the Lillsjön lake (Little Lake) and our favourite swamp, to pick and take pictures of the rare and unusual cloudberries, as well as the cotton grass, and enjoy the beautiful nature in this favourite spot.

We found out that the cranberries are already turning red at the most sunny spots and took some photos of full blooming beautiful heather.

The easy and scenic 3km walk was greatly appreshiated by the big husky, who pulled Kim with a big smile on his handsome face.

Back at the farm, Jachym made pancakes with blueberry and quark filling and we drank tea at the open fire.

We had fun, shared stories and jokes and played around with puppy names for our expected "H" litter.

It was very nice meeting everyone and we hope to see you come back to Sweden, guys!

Visitors from England - August 12,2008

Today we hosted our friend Kim and Claire with Tom from Lancaster, England.

As all were tired from a long hiking in the mountains, surprised by sudden rain, we made a bonfire to warm everybody up, cooked dinner and served hot tea.

After a visit with our huskies and nice long chat by the warm flames, souvenir shopping in our mini gift shop and signing the guestbook, it was time to say good bye.

A little sightseeing trip to Strömsund

A closer look at our county town of Strömsund (population ca 2.500). This small town has it´s charming places, great pizza and some cool history - a pleasant way how to spend a few hours or an afternoon.

Our guests and visitors can experience the same as we did, when we took a short sight-seeing "tour" with one of our huskies - Krtek:

The giant "Jorm" - a character from famous Swedish movie for children "Dunderklumpen". The story was written by Beppe Wolger, Strömsund´s favourite, who lived and composed at the Öhn village on Stömsund´s island. Beppe is known worldwide not just for his stunning stories, that were filmed, but also for acting in the movie "Pippi Longsock" as Pippi´s father.

This year the water in Vattudalen is quite low, so the dock and beach are quite visible.

Krtek enjoyed the walk thoroughfully.

250 Years of the Bonässet village - aka Look into Jämtland´s Traditions and History (August 9,2008)

Although we did not after all take our husky team to the 250 years aniversary celebration of the Bonässet village (http://www.bonaset.com/), due to dificulties with finding safe place at the location to give rides to children, we decided to go there as visitors and take a closer look inside the tiny community´s ordinary and traditional celebrations.
We did not regret a single minute spent at the lovely place, set up right on the banks of Vattudalen lake.

Around 200 people that live in the communities spread around the banks of Vattudalen, as well as people from the county town of Stromsund came to listen to the speaches about history and evolution of Bonässet. It was very interesting to learn and imagine the steam boats comming here from Stromsund in the 30´s, the big farms and even the ice skating competition, which later became quite known.

Looking at the gallery, set up in one of Bonässet´s historical buildings, with a museum like display of furniture and old and new photographs of families that lived and still live in and around the village, taking a walk along the shore and among the fields, visiting another old farm house with a display of local art (paintings, etc.), made us realize how important the connection for all the people in this area really is. The history and today ties these people together and meeting them later at the delicious traditional dinner and a bit later even a dance, we learned a lot about our "neighbours". How proud the farmers really are about where and how they live and the obvious togetherness made us feel we really are becomming part of this comunity and we realized even more that we are starting to feel real home here.

We had one of our huskies - Krtek with us and she made friends with quite 10 weeks old Finnish Spetz puppy Kirja.

The exhibition of the best hunting trophies past and present and the charming lights at the log barn in the night, when the dance started, were the best topping of the celebrations.

A live band formed from locals, called the "Bonasset Orchestra" was perfect. We learned a lot about Jämtland´s traditional folk music and dances, which are, by the way wonderful to listen to and watch.

There was also a bit of big beat, rock, jazz and country to satisfy everyone´s taste and teenage Manuel´s saxsofon play was definitly a highlight!

At night, a boat landed at the shore with more people joining the celebrations and one could see the lights of Aspnas, village on the other shore, so close to reach, yet couple hours to get to by car. Very charming.
All and all, a wonderful way how to spend not just a day, but for learning a bit more about the culture and history of Sweden´s North and it´s countryside, and a little journey to the local people´s hearts. Definitly a great way how to see the real life of the ordinary people in the North.

Thank you to all who worked hard on the wonderful program and made Bonasset´s history come live again! We are proud to be living in this area!

Swimming, Sun tanning and Relaxing...

...This is what summer and vaccation is about!

The Nordic summer is unique each year and month, and this July it is all you want it to be - sunshine, blue skyes, the refreshing swimming in the lake, catching the warm sun rays and some obligatory summer tan at the beach. The round, smooth stones, on which you lay the towl and your body to rest, fill you up with energy.

The nature is so beautiful and the waters completely still, and everything blooms. Just enough for your fantasy to start rolling to take photos or paint on stones and old, washed out wood, that the waves brought to the shore.

The company of the loyal huskies that are always willing to give you some extra energy and make you smile.

That all is part of what you experience at Nordic Husky Farm this time of the year!

Day on Husky Farm - July 28

We had a real nice visit today from Jasper, Barbro, Marcus, Linnea and Simon from Götteborg.

Linnea fell in love with our "Miss Beauty" - Mouse, who in return layed on her back and bagged for belly rubs :) She even sat on command for a handful of treats. She is truelly a spoiled dog! :)

We are looking forward to their visit next summer and wish them a safe journey back home.

Öhn´s Old School Auction - July 26, 2008

We spent nearly the whole Saturday on the beautiful island called simply Öhn (island), where we had a presentation of Nordic Husky Farm.
We were also helping out to raise money for Öhn´s old school, by selling lottery tickets and sponsoring the prizes.
The winners got various of our guided tours, husky rides and a tour around our kennel and farm with a lunch on open fire, as prizes.

We were especially happy that most winning tickets drawn, where of children/families, so they were very excited. Particulary one boy kept comming back to our presentation tent, petting the dogs, looking through the album we brought and glancing at a big plush husky. At the end of the day, the husky was his (what nice parents he had!), and he even won one of the tours in the lottery!

Mouse and Galena were this time the dogs of choice to come represent and make some good PR :)

As it was the hottest day of this summer so far (we are now in a heat wave), we were unable to bring the cart and more dogs, to make a demo run or give rides to kids, so we chose the two girls to come, wear a harness, do some modelling of how doggy booties are put on and how they function, etc. They had lots of attention, treats, belly and ear rubs and enjoyed the shade of the tent as well as the tiny island breeze.

No one was mad or dissapointed that we didn´t bring a team of dogs and gave no rides, everyone understood.

The auction was a real nice event - a typcial country auction, with furniture displayed outside the school building. Around 150 people came to bid and have a nice day. The auctioner was pretty cool elderly guy with a sense of great humor.
We encurage everyone who has the chance to come next year!

Besides old and new furniture, one could find antiques, kitchen utensils, porcelain, old horse wagon, a dog ski pulka, skis, garden grills, books, lamps, decorations, etc. The prices of the items were incredibly cheap (majority was donated), so even I gave it a try and bided on a cat tree (the kind with three floors, two "houses", several banches and mainly the long tall yucca trunk for scratching kitty claws. I got it for 50:-SEK! Sure hope our spoiled cats Ronja and Pippi will apreshiate it and stop abusing our furniture! :)

There were hot dogs, soda, home made coffee and carrot cakes and cinamon buns, people were cheerful and no one really minded the heat. At the end of the day, there were lots of brown and red faces, arms and legs, including ours :)

Besides having fun and meeting lots of new people, I believe we made a good PR and promotion of our company and kennel. It was actually interesting to hear quite a lot of folks asking us if we are the people from Vedjeön that have the sled dogs :)

Visiting the Vedjeön Island - July 8, 2008

As part of this Day on Husky Farm, we went for a walk to Vedjeön's beautiful island. We took Galena with us to enjoy the water.

The beach was peaceful and perfect for sunbathing, and the water in the lagoon was a lot warmer than the rest of the lake, so we actually went in as deep as our clothes allowed.

Pitty we didn't take swimming suits with us! Galena had a great swim and enjoyed the wooden deck at the south side of the island, where the water was clear and still as a mirror.

Overall a great summertime day! We are already looking forward to our next visitors.

Playing with the Huskies- July 8, 2008

Sofie and Emilie decided to come second time again to play with the dogs some more and take pictures with them.

Everyone had lots of fun, Sofie played football with Granite, Nugget and Sparky and we had some icecream as a reward afterwords.

It was a lovely afternoon and the huskies just loved all the attention!

Seven happy people, laughing kids, time spent fishing, petting dogs, brushing their coats, building tipi, chopping firewood, grilling sausages and cooking cofee on an open fire.

Although the summer seems a bit cold this year so far, it did not stop anyone of our visitors from having fun.

Gabriel has enjoyed feeding the dogs with Jachym, while the girls snuggled with our cats Pippi and Ronja and went to have some hugs from Babeli, Nugget and Cooper.

We all had a great time and look forward to the next visit!
